Key points for using high-purity acetylene

In areas where high-purity acetylene is produced, synthesized, used, and stored, install combustible gas detection and alarm devices that are interlocked with emergency ventilation systems. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment. Operators must wear antistatic work clothing and are strictly prohibited from wearing garments that easily generate static electricity or shoes with long nails. Avoid contact with oxidizers, acids, and halogens. Safety warning signs should be posted in production and storage areas. Handle cylinders and accessories with care to prevent damage. Equip these areas with fire-fighting equipment and leak-response tools appropriate in both type and quantity.
(1) Personnel using high-purity acetylene should be equipped with portable combustible gas detection and alarm devices. Avoid contact with copper, silver, or mercury. Also avoid using brass containing more than 66% copper, welding materials containing both copper and silver, and pressure gauges containing mercury.
(2) Before entering a confined space where high-purity acetylene is present or may leak, first measure the acetylene concentration and then enforce mechanical ventilation for at least 10 minutes, until the acetylene concentration drops below 20% of its lower explosive limit. During the operation, personnel shall monitor the space every 30 minutes, and the concentration of flammable gases must not exceed 20% of the lower explosive limit.
(3) During hot work operations, all equipment and pipelines that could be connected to flammable or explosive materials must be completely isolated from the system and disconnected by installing blind flanges. If necessary, connecting pipelines should be removed.
(4) There must be no water inside the calcium carbide storage area.
(5) When using high-purity acetylene cylinders, please note:
Pay attention to securing and preventing tipping. The use of bench presses is strictly prohibited. For acetylene cylinders that have already been laid down, direct outdoor use is not permitted. Before use, allow the cylinder to stand undisturbed for 15 minutes, then connect it to a pressure regulator before proceeding—otherwise, there could be serious hazards. Handle gas cylinders with care; rough handling such as knocking or bumping is strictly forbidden.
When acetylene cylinders and oxygen cylinders are used simultaneously, the distance between the two cylinders should be greater than 10 meters. The gas inside the cylinders must not be completely exhausted; a residual pressure of at least 0.05 MPa must be maintained.
Acetylene cylinders should not be placed near heat sources or electrical equipment. In summer, shade measures should be taken to prevent direct sunlight exposure, and the distance from open flames should be greater than 10 meters. If the cylinder valve freezes, do not use fire to thaw it—simply immerse it in water no colder than 10°C to defrost it.
Acetylene cylinders must be equipped with a dedicated pressure regulator when in use. Before starting work, check the flashback arrestor; otherwise, do not use the cylinder. When opening the valve, the operator should stand to the side and behind the valve and move it slowly.
(6) Regarding the high-purity acetylene station: When heating is permitted inside the station building during winter, electric open-flame heaters must not be used. Instead, tubular radiators should be employed to prevent dust accumulation and electrostatic induction, and these radiators should be positioned at least 1 meter away from the acetylene generator. When the temperature drops below 0°C, a sodium chloride aqueous solution can be used in place of water to prevent freezing in the generator and flashback arrestor. If the pipelines of the high-purity acetylene generator become frozen, they can be thawed using hot water. Mobile acetylene generators should be shaded during summer to protect them from high temperatures and thermal radiation. While the acetylene generator equipment is in operation, operators must closely monitor changes in pressure and temperature across all components. If the pressure gauge reading suddenly increases, the safety valve starts leaking, or the pressure gauge needle fails to rise within a few minutes after startup, the equipment should be immediately stopped and the fault rectified. Exceeding the specified pressure and temperature limits is strictly prohibited.
