Safety Precautions for High-Purity Acetylene

Before performing hot work for major or minor repairs, high-purity acetylene equipment, vessels, and pipelines shall be purged with nitrogen. The purity of the nitrogen used shall be greater than 98%. Hot work may only commence once the acetylene concentration at the purge outlet has fallen below 0.5%. Prior approval from the relevant authorities is required, a dedicated supervisor must be assigned, and necessary fire and explosion prevention measures must be implemented.

  Safety Knowledge for Storing High-Purity Acetylene:

  (1) High-purity acetylene cylinders shall be stored in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse specifically designated for flammable gases. Keep them away from ignition sources and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30°C.

  (2) High-purity acetylene shall be stored separately from oxidizers, acids, and halogens; mixing is strictly prohibited. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation systems. The use of machinery and tools that easily generate sparks is forbidden. The storage area must be equipped with emergency spill-response equipment. When storing acetylene cylinders, they should be kept upright and protected against tipping. It is strictly forbidden to store them in the same direction as oxygen or flammable materials. Acetylene cylinders must never be placed in poorly ventilated areas or in locations exposed to radiation, nor may they be placed on insulating materials such as rubber. The cylinder storage room or warehouse must be managed by a dedicated person and equipped with fire-fighting equipment and conspicuous fire safety signs.

  (3) The high-purity acetylene storage room must be well-ventilated to ensure that the acetylene concentration in the air does not exceed 1% (by volume). The roof or upper part of the exterior walls of the storage room should be equipped with louvers or vents. The vents should face a safe area, and the room should be ventilated at least three times per hour; in case of an emergency, ventilation should occur at least seven times per hour.

  Safety Knowledge for the Transportation of High-Purity Acetylene:

  (1) Transport vehicles shall be equipped with hazard labels and identification numbers, and fitted with satellite positioning devices capable of recording driving data. Without prior approval, transport vehicles are prohibited from entering areas restricted to vehicles transporting hazardous chemicals.

  (2) High-purity acetylene should be transported using dedicated tank trucks. The flame arresters (spark extinguishers) installed on the tank trucks must be in good working order. Both the tanks and transport vehicles must be equipped with static grounding cables. The fueling stations should have more than two dry powder or carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, as well as explosion-proof tools. Additionally, shading measures should be in place to prevent direct sunlight exposure.

  (3) When transporting cylinders by vehicle, the cylinder openings should face to the right side in the direction of vehicle travel, and the loading height must not exceed the height of the vehicle compartment. When unloading cylinders vertically, the compartment height must be at least two-thirds of the cylinder height. It is strictly prohibited to mix incompatible items in the vehicle or allow unauthorized personnel to ride along. During transportation, keep away from sources of ignition. Do not park near open flames or crowded areas. A designated person must be responsible for parking. In the event of a leak or fire, immediately drive the vehicle to a safe location and proceed with firefighting or containment efforts.

  (4) Pipelines transporting high-purity acetylene should not be laid near heat sources. When pipelines are laid on the ground, protective measures must be taken, and conspicuous warning signs should be installed in areas with frequent pedestrian traffic and where vehicles or foreign objects may collide with the pipelines. When acetylene pipelines are laid overhead, they must be supported by non-combustible brackets or trestles. Underneath already installed acetylene pipelines, it is prohibited to construct buildings unrelated to the acetylene pipeline or to store flammable materials.
